Energy Display Meter installations begin in schools

Pupils from Bolney and Shipley Primary Schools in West Sussex learn about energy awareness at a recent event run by the county council

This week will see the start of installations of a free Energy Display Meter (EDM) in 137 primary and secondary schools across the country. Those that will benefit include seven schools in Maidenhead, six schools in Manchester, four schools in Bolton and three in Peterborough.

The schools have all successfully completed the simple online application process and will soon be monitoring their energy usage in real time. By linking to the school’s existing IT network, the EDM can display data across the school for all to see.

In conjunction with British Gas, a suite of lessons plans will be on offer to incorporate the findings from the EDM read outs into curriculum subjects including science and geography, which will assist in raising awareness of sustainability issues in young people.

By understanding the immediate effect of turning off a light or not taking the lift in school can have, the initiative aims to encourage behaviour change not just in teachers and pupils in school, but also at home.
