Schools learn about Energy Display Meters in green-focused workshops

Generation Green Workshop with Gemma Wilson (WSCC) and pupils from St Peter's Primary School, Ardingly

Pupils and teachers from 18 primary schools ‘engauged’ this week (17 May) for an event on saving energy and water and learned how they could benefit from a free Energy Display Meter.

The first ‘Engauge Petal Day’ was hosted by West Sussex County Council’s (WSCC) Carbon Reduction Team which is piloting a project to reduce carbon dioxide emissions with 40 schools. After the pilot the project will be rolled out to all schools across West Sussex.

This work is linked to the ‘Engauge Programme’, which was launched last year by the County Council to help schools improve their sustainability across eight categories, known as ‘petals’, including energy and water.

Pupils and staff who attended the event took part in a series of interactive workshops, which showed what is available to schools to help them in reducing carbon emissions ‘Engauge’, ‘Generation Green’ and British Gas hosted workshops. Schools found out about the free Energy Display Meters for schools initiative and there were demonstrations of other resources available including online lesson activities.

WSCC Cabinet Member for Environment and Economy, Deborah Urquhart, said: “Events like these show we are moving forward with the aim of making the planet a better place for future generations.”
